Core Studio Pilates & YogaA body fat analysis is crucial to one’s health, especially athletes. Athlete’s bodies go through cycles of peak performance and rest. During an athlete’s sports season, their bodies are conditioned specifically to their sport; while during an off-season, less is demanded of their bodies. With a body fat analysis, athletes can monitor their body fat to ensure their bodies are at optimal performance. Body fat is commonly measured with WHR (waist hip ratio), BMI (body mass index), and Skinfold.

A waist and hip ratio evaluation is done to determine one’s body fat distribution to determine body shape. There are two body types: Android (apple shaped) and Gynoid (pear shaped). An Android body has more abdominal fat and is at an increased risk for hypertension (high blood pressure), Type 2 Diabetes, and coronary artery disease. A Gynoid body’s fat is mainly distributed in the hip and thighs.

Body Fat AnalysisBMI (body mass index) is a quick and easy evaluation that evaluates weight relative to height. However, BMI does not distinguish between body fat, muscle mass, and bone. Therefore, it does not account for muscle mass. BMI is largely used as a quick mathematical equation only needing one’s height and weight to determine body fat.

One of the most accurate techniques to determine body fat is using a seven-site skinfold measurement. The skinfold technique is based on the fact that the skinfold thickness is proportional to one’s fat weight. This technique determines one’s fat weight, lean muscle mass, ideal body weight, and how much weight one needs to lose or gain to meet an ideal body fat percentage. This information is crucial as there are many health implications of obesity including coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipemia (high cholesterol) and certain cancers.

An athlete’s body is their foundation. With a body fat analysis, athletes can monitor their body fat. At Core Studio Pilates & Yoga, our body fat analysis consists of before and after pictures, waist hip ratio, BMI, percentage of body fat using a seven-site skinfold technique, and evaluation of lean body mass, fat mass, and an ideal weight.
