Spartans defeat Mavericks with second half scoring surge

The Sun Valley Spartans scored 40 second half points to erase a 17-7 halftime deficit to defeat conference rival, Marvin Ridge, 48-37.

The Mavericks jumped out to a 17-7 lead, but things went downhill quickly when Sun Valley’s Fabrice Funderburke returned the second half kickoff 98-yards for a touchdown.  At one stretch of the third quarter, Sun Valley’s explosive offense posted three TDs in less than two minutes of possession time.

Jeremiah MillerSam Howell, the SV sophomore quarterback, was 13-of-25 for 262 yards and four touchdowns- three passing, one rushing.

Sun Valley’s Fabrice Funderburke was the leading rusher of the game. Funderburke carried the ball 19 times for 184 yards and two scores.

Jeremiah Miller, senior Spartan wideout, led all receivers with 154 yards on six catches and two touchdowns.

Sun Valley will face Weddington this Friday at home while Marvin Ridge will host Piedmont.
