Ron Massey speaks with Piedmont faithful

Last night Piedmont High School was introduced to their new football coach Ron Massey. Over 30 parents, players, and Panther fans were invited to meet the former A.L. Brown head coach and athletic director who retired in 2011.

After being introduced by Piedmont principal Jonathan Bowers, Massey spoke for over 20 minutes before meeting individually with the Piedmont faithful. It was an impressive introduction as the coach and his wife, Sherry spent over 90 minutes meeting the parents, players and fans.

Massey has 23 years of head coaching experience with Raleigh Enloe, Fayetteville Seventy-First, King Mountain and most recently with the aforementioned, A.L. Brown of Kannapolis. Having compiled an impressive 205-85-3 over that timespan.

Make no mistake about it, Ron Massey is a proven winner with a record to support the reputation but he emphasized at the beginning of his speech his main objective.

“If you son participates in our program he will be a better person. We will teach him to be a great football player and great athlete but more importantly I want him to be a great person. That is my number one goal.”

As A.L. Brown principal Kevin Garay told the Independent-Tribune newspaper back in March of 2011, “What separates him are his integrity, his commitment to doing what is right and his modeling what a leader should be. He’s going to be difficult to replace.”

By all accounts last night was Massey’s first unofficial win. He was well received, the players were excited but now the hard work lies ahead. Player evaluation and long, hot summer practice sessions before kickoff in mid-August.  Football is back in Unionville.

Check out the interview below that I conducted with the coach shortly after his “meet and greet.”
