8th-Grade Mavs Win Championship with Late 4th Quarter Comeback

By Tim Winters, 11/06/19, 11:30AM EST

Marvin Ridge shocked Holy Trinity, 22-14, winning the 8th-grade championship by defeating a class that was previously unbeaten in three years.

Think about that for a second. Since stepping foot into 6th grade three years ago (thirty-plus games), the Holy Trinity kids have not taken a loss until Saturday afternoon.

After the Bulldogs scored a rushing touchdown with 7:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, a loss was the farthest thing on the minds of the Trinity faithful.

That's when the Mavs and their young quarterback, #15, Evan Medders, went to work. The quarterback displaying the poise and leadership of a senior varsity QB marched (actually ran) his team downfield for a game-tying touchdown drive.

It was an impressive drive as Marvin Ridge found an area to exploit in the Bulldog defense late in the fourth quarter with the Mavs' sideline calling successive runs up the middle for the Maverick QB. Large chunks of yardage gained with each play call. With the ball resting just beyond the HT one-yard line with Bulldogs keying on Medders, the ball was handed off to #9 Cole Searight, who delivered with the game-tying score.

A few plays later, Searight came up big on defense with a beautiful outstretched, finger-tip interception that he ran down to the Trinity seven-yard line. Marvin Ridge sealed the upset and championship when Searight scored the game-winning TD.
