Weddington defeated Marvin Ridge on Friday night to move onto the third round of the NCHSAA 4A playoffs.
Leading the way for Weddington was senior running back Kyle Parsons, who scored three touchdowns and rushed for 250 yards on 27 carries. In his last two meetings against the Mavericks, Parsons has feasted, scoring six touchdowns and rushing for 515 yards.
Marvin Ridge pulled within three points twice in the second half, but Weddington is tough to beat at home, and in the playoffs, well, that's another story altogether.
The Warriors lost a home playoff game in 2003 to East Gaston- the same year I moved to NC. Twenty-one years ago! Talk about home-field advantage.
That historic run will be put to the test once again this Friday, when Weddington hosts another county and conference foe, Cuthbertson.
These two schools last met up in the playoffs back in 2014, in the 3AA Western Regional final, in a classic that Weddington pulled out in the final twenty-four seconds.
We can only hope for such an atmosphere and game.
Full game highlights of the second meeting in three weeks between two conference and county rivals. This time a playoff advancement hangs in the balance.
